ABC Brewery -
(Three of Five)
Get the Aussie Burger, it's awesome! This is a nice atmosphere, located on the main square
in downtown Flagstaff. Fries are good. Sample the beers according to your
palate (they are all good) and
if you are a Scotch drinker you will find a nice selection.
Beaver Street Brewery -
(Three of Five)
The pizza is very good but the salmon club sandwich is Steve's personal favorite.
The beer is good but if you have the desire for wine the price is very reasonable
for a bottle.
Black Bean -
(Four of Five)
One of our favorites they make great burritos (no beans for Steve). Steve's favorite
was the Tropical Chicken but they took it off the menu. Serving beer earned them
another half-fork at least. On our recent visit in 2012 they appeared closed :(
Charlies's -
(Three of Five)
This restaurant is located in the old Weatherford hotel along with two bars. We
like the upstairs bar the best and sitting on the balcony with friends. The
restaurant has an excellent Scotch menu.
Chili's
-
(4.0 of Five)
(2012) Not all of these franchises are the same. Depending on who is bartending this
restaurant has a great Bloody Mary. The Big Mouth burgers are a great meal and we
favor the Southwest, no buns-no fries with a side of guacamole. Try their queso dip
poured over this burger! Steve has wine and we usually dine for less than $40.

Fratelli Pizza
-
(Three of Five)
(2012) This thin crust pizza is a regular when we are at our friend's house in East Flagstaff.
A great value and good pizza keeps us coming back. They must put sugar in their sauce because
Steve's blood sugar was high after only two pieces. Three of us were satisfied with a large
pepperoni for only $14.

Hiro's Sushi
-
(Five of Five)
The sushi is good and inexpensive. Great value and friendly service. Our favorite sushi in Flagstaff.

Josephine’s -
(Five of Five)
Probably the most high-end restaurant in the area this one is great for special
occasions. The Pork Tenderloin Medallions are great. Ask for Table 62 (by the
window upstairs).
Kelly's Christmas Tree -
This one went out of business. For a while we had a reputation for restaurants we
liked going out of business, like the Pasta place near Walmart. Kelly's was
special as it was the location where Steve proposed marriage to Marnie.
Mike & Rhonda's East -
(Five of Five)
Great place for breakfast with classic diner flavors and huge portions are
reasonable prices. It is a real challenge to see the bottom of a coffee
cup here!
Mike & Rhonda's West -
Similar in theme to the East location but we visited this one less frequently.
Oregano's -
(Four of Five)
This is one of our favorite restaurants. Music is big-band era, the Italian style
dishes are all good. A bottle of wine is a great value here. Always too crowded for
dinner but not bad for lunch.
Outback Steak House -
Even though this is a chain there is always the possibility of one being different
than another. This remains Steve's favorite place to go on his birthday,
the Queen Victoria Fillet and Alice Springs Chicken are the favorites.
Pasto's -
(4.5 of Five)
We consider this to be a high-end restaurant that is nice for special occasions.
The lamb is excellent.
Pesto's -
(Three of Five)
This is a nice Deli style restaurant with a special dinner on Valentine’s Day
for which you will need a reservation. Bring your own wine, as of this
writing they did not carry alcoholic beverages.
Picazzo's Organic Italian Kitchen
-
(5.0 of Five)
(2012) This is one of our favorite haunts with great gourmet pizzas. A staple for us is the
Meaty Meaty Meaty but this latest visit we tried the new Buffalo wings (very hot!) and the Wild
Scallops & Bacon Pizza. Wow! Great flavors and a great bottle of wine. Marnie finished with
the Skillet Brownie but couldn't finish it. We were full to bursting for under $50.

Sakura's
-
(2.5 of Five)
This is an expensive restaurant with the open grill at the table theme. The sushi is good.

George and Dragon Irish Pub
-
(4 of Five)
This one gets a high score because, somehow we charmed our waitress who was both warm and
friendly. Bye the end of the meal she gave us a free Smithwick's t-shirt and glass.
(We left a 50% tip.) Steve had the Bangers & Mashed and all the food was delicious.
http://www.georgeanddragonpub.net/
Grapes Restaurant & Bar
-
(Three of Five)
(2012) Jerome is a quaint mining town located between Clarkdale and Prescott. Grapes is in the
location of the old brewery and is what we think of as a higher end restaurant but with reasonable
prices. One of our friends knew the server Ashley personally but I suspect she would have been
equally charming regardless. Wednesday night is $5 appetizers and five of us ate our fill for $71.
http://grapesjerome.com/
Pepe's Cafe'
-
(Three of Five)
(2012) Behind every great meal there is usually a Mexican Cook. Pepe's has a 50's diner
motif' but serves American/Mexican breakfast, lunch and dinner. The portion size and
food quality was a steal and two of us ate for under $13 including beverages!
Famous Dave's
-
(4.0 of Five)
(2012) Steve has eaten at the restaurant in Minnesota but only had a burger. This restaurant
had some great sounding dishes and the dry-rub Rib Tips should be something that doesn't
raise the blood sugar (without sauce anyway). Marnie had the Pork Platter and Steve had
a couple glasses of Cab. The meal was fantastic and we took at least a meal home with us,
all for $47.
http://www.famousdaves.com/Bakersfield
Berkley, in general, is filled with freaky people of all walks of life, as one
might expect. While the dining is a great experience at low cost we found the
whole area dirty. If the city wants to clean the place up they need to clean
the streets and sidewalks and get control of the pandering, panhandling and
vagrancy.
Barney's Gourmet Burgers
-
(4.5 of Five)
(2011) We both had the Baja burger (no bun) and Steve ordered a side of their Guacamole. It was
delicious! Our server Carrington was polite and attentive. When we saw the word "gourmet" we
both rolled our eyes and expected a $15 burger but the prices were quite reasonable. A glass
of tea and two glasses of wine came to $38 plus tip.
http://www.barneyshamburgers.com/
Biryani House -
(3 of Five)
(2011) Cheap faire and great taste. Marnie and I shared the Mushroom Masala, Lamb Seekh Kabaab
and Steve had the Chicken Tandoori. All were quite spicy and Steve paid for that the
next day. No alcohol is served so we drank water. These three dishes fed us well for $13.
Jupiter -
(4.5 of Five)
What a great place, the courtyard is an oasis from the busy streets. This is also a brewery
so Steve tried the Stout, it was as good as what we used to make, and that is
saying something! We shared the brie and lamb skewer appetizers and both were really
good! We also shared a small pepperoni pizza and it too was savory and delicious.
Our server, Emina, was friendly and courteous and we could not have had a better time.
The bill came to $44 after a generous tip.
Man Puku -
(4 of Five)
The atmosphere is like the "street food" or Asian fast food but the sushi is excellent
and cheap. We highly recommend people try this if they are in the area. Two people
can eat their fill for less than $25.
Triple Rock -
(3 of Five)
Another brewery, we had their famous burgers and sampled the beer. All was very good.
Bodega is best known as the filming location for Alfred Hitchcock's, The Birds.
Indeed, the school and church (made famous earlier by it's photograph taken by Ansel
Adams) are still standing and look much the same. There are plenty of dining opportunities
in nearby Bodega Bay, which is still a working fishing village. Occidental, hometown of
Primus' Les Claypool reminded us of a European mountain village from a Christmas diorama.
Everyone we met was friendly and helpful and the communities were clean and well kept.
Dillon Beach Resort Cafe'
-
(Three of Five)
(2012) This dining room offers a great view of the Pacific Ocean. We shared the fantastic Calamari
and Fish & Chips. Steve had the red wine, they only offer two; Cline Oakley Five Reds or
Cline Oakley Five Whites. Cline is probably our favorite winery and it was through their
website we learned about Dillon Beach Resort. Even though we shared the appetizer and entrée the bill came to $30.
http://www.dillonbeachresort.com/cafe.html
Negri's Italian Restaurant in Occidental
-
(3.5 of Five)
(2012) Our charming server Deborah recommended the meat lover's pizza and it was very good.
There is no extra crust to tear off so if your diet allows a few carbs you can eat the whole
piece. We sat with a lovely view of the charming town and surrounding mountains. Our meal
with two glasses of wine came to $32 plus tip.
http://www.negrisrestaurant.com/Site/NEGRIS_ITALIAN_RESTAURANT_HOME.html
Bodega Country Store
-
(4.0 of Five)
(2012) Dining in a store leaves something to be desired but they are known for their
Crab Mac & Cheese and several smoked chowders (we had white clam). The food was better
than we imagined, when I told the server they ranked the number one place to dine she laughed
and said that is because they were the only place to eat in Bodega (not quite true). Truly
the Crab Mac & Cheese is worth going out of your way if you are within 100 miles of Bodega!
The chowder was fresh and flavorful. We took half of each as leftovers so there was plenty
of food and a glass of wine for $26.
http://www.bodegastore.com/
Agave -
(2 of Five)
The atmosphere, despite the effort to decorate it as a high end restaurant, felt
more like a gang hangout. Concord, in general feels that way. The signature
Fajita Agave Burrito was very good.
The waiter recommended shrimp as the meat filler and it was prepared to perfection.
Benihana -
(2.5 of Five)
We don't think either one of us has been here before. The tableside/grillside
chef is reminiscent of Sakura's in Flagstaff. While we expect to pay
more for the entertainment value adding a bottle of wine brings the cost
for two people over $100. A bit too pricey for our weekly date! Reserve
this for special occasions and entertaining clients if you do that sort
of thing. Rare was a little too done for our beef taste. Shrimp and
scallops were perfect.
Chevy's Mexican Grill -
We have only had appetizers and fajitas here but it is a regular after-work meeting place for
Marnie's co-workers. The wings made Steve's blood sugar jump to 175!
Chick's Donuts -
(3.5 of Five)
This cute little business is a combination donut shop and classic
diner atmosphere. We had breakfast, all the food was good, the Fajita Burrito
might be the best we have ever had. Coffee was delicious. Later in
the month we tried Chick's for lunch. We both got burgers and they were
the classic delicious diner flavors and the onion rings were perfect.
Since then we have taken guests and Steve stops in for the Fajita Burrito
whenever he has to run errands in the area. One of our guests complained
about the cleanliness in the kitchen.
Chili's -
(4 of Five)
Nice variety restaurant. Even though this is a chain, each franchise has subtle
differences. This one has our favorite burgers of all our local restaurants.
We also enjoy great hospitality as we are frequent diners (and good tippers).
E.J. Phaire -
(2.5 of Five)
Get the Breakfast Burrito or the Reuben Omlette. We have reviewed this pub before but this
time we met a potential business person of like mind to discuss business
structures and had breakfast & coffee. They only serve breakfast on weekends
and they don't open until 10AM. An oxymoron I know.
El Torito -
(2.5 of Five)
We shared a plate of Fajita Supremas where the server pours a little tequila
on the plate and serves it flaming. The shrimp was cooked perfect and tasted
fantastic! The beef was very good but the chicken came out a little dry.
Service was good, very business-like. We both had iced tea.
Rocco's -
El Torito -
(3.5 of Five)
This is one of our favorite pizzas. We usually get the meat pizza but one time we
tried sausage, mushroom and peppers. Not our favorite and the crust turned out
doughy. The atmosphere looks Italian. While noisy you can still hear well enough
to occupy your wait with Trivial Pursuit cards on each table. The carafe and
half-carafe of wine are both a great value.
Swagat Indian Cuisine -
(3 of Five)
The food was all great. We had given up on Indian food after experiences at other
resaurants and these dished have gotten us excited about Indian Cuisine again.
Kome Japanese Seafood Buffet
(3.5 of Five)
A group of us and friends got a free limo ride into San Francisco and had dinner here.
They had a giant sushi buffet, separate soup buffet and then two more hot food lines
with duck, pork, beef, chicken and every kind of edible seafood you can imagine (plus
several we never imagined being edible). $20.95 per person plus drinks.
Methany's
-
Peasant's Courtyard
-
Pete's Brass Rail & Car Wash
-
Chow
-
(2011) Located in Blackhawk Plaza where they have free concerts each Friday of Summer.
Marnie and Steve shared a bacon cheesburger and Marnie had the
sweet potato fries. We both ate for $18 including a glass of wine.
(5 of Five)
(2011) Recommended by our Realtor, Tracey, this fine little bistro serves decadent but delicious
breakfast. Marnie had the Funghi Omelette with a side of bacon and Steve had the Eggs
Alaska with a side of sausage. Both were delicious but be prepared, the meal cost $40
plus tip with no alcohol.
http://www.thepeasantscourtyard.com/
(3.5 of Five)
(2011) "There is no Brass Rail, There is no Car Wash, and Who the [heck] is Pete?"
The atmosphere is family pub with a variety of sandwiches and brews. Steve had the
Danville Burger with pepperjack cheese added and a strongly hopped red ale. Marnie
had a steak sandwich and the cider. All of it was delicious and our server, Leah
was attentive and friendly. Dinner for two with drinks came to about $36.
http://petesbrassrail.com/
(4.5 of Five)
This is a cross between a cafe and family atmosphere. Marnie and Steve both love the Lamb
Burger. Both times we have eaten here we had Leslie as a server, quite but very nice, patient and
helpful. If you partake of a pre or post-dinner Scotch the pour is generous at over 2-3 oz.
http://www.chowfoodbar.com/danville_location.html
Boeger Winery -
We had a very friendly Server with a great Sense of humor. Marnie wasn't going
to taste or would taste my tasting and then we had the brilliant idea that she would
taste a different six wines and Steve would get to try 12 wines total. The server
was impressed by the idea but about halfway through the tastings the flaw in the
idea hit me along with the buzz, that is too much wine.
Latcham Vinyards -
All the wines we tried were fantastic. We were served by a friendly young lady and
we bought some wine to have with second lunch overlooking the vineyards.
Lava Cap -
This is a great small tasting room filled with awards. The server was very friendly
albeit somewhat flustered by a complicated order. We all bought together to get the
case discount but we wound up with one wrong bottle. Every wine we tasted was great
and we bought a couple to have with lunch overlooking the vineyard.
Sierra Vista -
This is a small family run winery with a great view of the Sierra Nevada mountain range
which still had snow on during our visit. We didn't care for the wines and our friends
admitted that the wines had changed since their last visit.
44 Sports Lounge
-
(2 of Five)
(2011) Marnie had a cheeseburger with avocado and Steve had two eggs over-medium, a side of sausage
links and a side of bacon (thinking we might split the bacon). The sides were $3.95 each
and came with two pieces. So much for sharing. The atmosphere is struggling between a
sports bar and a lounge and so offers a unique experience to the sounds of hip hop. Our
meal including a glass of the house wine came to $35.
http://www.44sportslounge.com/joomla/
Bo BBQ & Catering -
(4 of Five)
The atmosphere is clean, bright and slightly Western in style. A couple of
different people recommended this restaurant to us. We were
completely pampered by the hosts and servers. We had the Brisket and a
side of Pork Ribs. It was all very good. They have a wood fired BBQ and
the smells and flavors permeated the premises. Even though slow cooked,
the meat was very moist and flavorful. They run out of sausages by Wednesday
so pop in on a Friday if you want to try them. I guess we have to go
back!
El Charro
-
(3.5 of Five)
This is one of our favorite Mexican Restaurants so we have eaten here several times.
Marnie had a great chicken dish and Steve tried the Arroz con Pollo, sans Arroz (rice).
It compared favorably to the same dish at Casa Bonita in Flagstaff but needed a little
more cheese. The Bloody Mary was terrible, barely drinkable, but one must not let
alcohol go to waste. Dinner for two plus one drink and ~20% tip $41.
http://elcharro1947.com/
Mendocino Hotel -
(4.5 of Five)
(2011) Marnie had the fish-n'-chips, battered with the local Red Seal Ale, and Steve had a really good burger with Brie and Bacon, Yum!
We liked it so much we ate here twice. In an effort to complement the cook Steve told our
waiter Joe that the fish-n'-chips rivaled Cliff House [in San Francisco] for our favorite.
He laughed and said he thought he had eaten there as a child. While driving around Fort
Brag we spotted a local "Cliff House" located in a trailer park. Oops, is this what Joe
thought we meant?! We made it a point to go back to explain ourselves and ensure our
compliment was not taken as an insult and to share the humor of the moment. It turned
out Joe knew what we meant and proceeded to get us a table overlooking the crashing waves
of the Pacific Ocean.

Perkos Cafe, Fort Bragg, CA -
(2011) The sausages were good but greasy. Coffee was good. Good cell coverage.
North Coast Brewing Co. -
(3.5 of Five)
(2011) The atmosphere was pool-hall like in dark brown and purple. Marnie had the fish-n'-chips
and the onion rings were the texture of Funyuns. All
very good. Steve had a sausage sample appetizer (hot, hot and hotter) and drank most
of the 12 beer sampler. The Red Seal Ale is the best beer but all of them were good.
http://www.northcoastbrewing.com/
DipSea Cafe -
Steve had the Fish & Chips. The batter was very crunchy but had a burnt taste,
probably from a stout or porter beer batter. The cod was perfect. Marnie had a
turkey sandwich - sans bread. The turkey was a little dry. We both had iced tea.
Fish Hopper Restaurant -
(Four of Five)
Great Sea Food! Attentive staff.
Archie’s American Diner -
(Four of Five)
Across the street from the aquarium, great breakfast!
Sea Harvest -
(Two of Five)
Okay Fish & Chips. Very fresh crabs and lobsters, they catch them themselves. We didn’t
try anything but the fish & chips.
A Taste of Monterey -
(3.5 of Five)
Wine tasting, find it at the end of the water side mall on cannery row. Great view and
atmosphere, light rock music. The cheese sucked, wine was okay.
S&M give it a 3.5 of 5 forks for the view and music
Schreid Vineyards -
Wine tasting, all the reds were good, free corkage at most of the restaurants.
Gianni’s Pizza -
(Four of Five)
Up on 725 Lighthouse Ave. Great Pizza, wine by the half carafe is a great value.
Louie Linguini’s -
Pizza was terrible, salad okay.
Goosecrossing Winery -
This is usually by appointment only but if they are not busy and the party is
small they will serve the wine tasting for the price of your name and address.
Matt was our server and was a very nice and friendly young person. In addition
to the wines normally available Matt had us try a big Cabernet Sauv. and a
mystery wine that turned out to be a Cabernet Franc (Sachin guessed it right).
All the wines were good and their Merlot, grown on the property has a very
unique flavor for a Merlot.
Beaulieu Winery -
Wines were okay. Our server, Irv, was very quiet until Steve got him talking about
Zins and he turned us on to a Winery in Alameda. The pours were stingy.
V. Sattui Winery -
This place was huge and crowded. There is a great deli section with every
kind of cheese imaginable. It looked like they had twenty or more servers in
the wine tasting room. Ours was Andy and he was very friendly. He gave us a
generous tasting of Syrah, Pinots, Zins, Cabs and an Angelica. All were good
or great wines! We picked one of the Cabernets to have for a late lunch at the
picnic tables.
Black Angus Steakhouse
-
(3 of Five)
(2011) This is a great family steakhouse that offers a quiet and more private dining
experience due the the high booths breaking up the dining area. Watch for great coupons,
for example we both had Lobster, Steak and Shrimp entrees and two glasses of wine plus one
Bulls Chelada (beer Bloody Mary) for $57 plus tip.
http://www.blackangus.com/
Copper Skillet Courtyard -
(4 of Five)
(2011) Steve had the 2 and 2 (two eggs and two sausages[there were three sausages]) and
Marnie had an omlete. The food was great. Jack - the owner of this charming restaurant
was friendly and hard working, right along side the waitresses, waiting and bussing tables.
Steve asked about the delicious coffee but didn't catch much but that it was local. Two
can feast for under $25.
El Tapatio
-
(Three of Five)
(2011) A family Mexican restaurant with a separate bar, Ana, our server was friendly
and polite. For an appitizer we shared Jalapeno Poppers.
Marnie had the Carnitas and Steve had the Tres Amigos Fajitas. The feast came to $50.
Jack's Restaurant & Bar
-
(4 of Five)
(2011) A new restaurant in downtown Pleasant Hill, we tried the Bacon Mac (not
as good as Marnie's) and the Sunset Boulevard Burger. It was all good and
a pleasant, if a little sterile, atmosphere. Steve found out they are open for
breakfast and had the Carnivore Omelet which was very good. They were a little
slow on coffee refills but there was a great view of the fountain.
http://jacksrestaurants.com/
Los Panchos
-
(3.0 of Five)
(2012) We heard great things about our local taqueria so when they reopened for the new year after
the holiday break we tried the Carnitas Chimichanga which had undeclared beans and Chili Relleano.
On another visit we tried the tacos (chicken and beef) and the Super Burito (no beans, they make
Steve sick). The flavors are really good and the portions are satisfying. There is very little
seating outside so be prepared to take the food to go if there isn't a table available. Two adults
can get their fill easily for $10!
http://www.lospanchosrestaurant.com/
Magoo's Grill
-
(3.5 of Five)
(2011) The ambiance of this bar & grill was a little weird but we were there early for dinner, the
few people that were there all seemed to know each other like in a smaller community. The servers
were very pleasant and attentive and the food was great. Steve had the bacon cheeseburger which
was generous and had a great smokey flavor. It went well with a Guinness. Marnie had the fish
& chips. The fish was a little greasy but very good and the fries were crispy, just the way we
like them. Dinner for two plus one drink was less than $20 plus tip.
http://www.magoosgrill.com/
Mazza Grill -
Another new restaurant Mediterranean, in downtown Pleasant Hill, we were served Shawerma Meat
Salads by a friendly man named Ed. The food was savory and delicious but
they did not have an unsweetened beverage that Steve could drink. We enjoyed
the cafe' style atmosphere but next time we will get the meal to go.
Mr. Lucky's -
(2011) Marnie had eaten here once before. We stopped in to this Bar & Restaurant on a Saturday,
Marnie had the Guacamole burger and Steve had the Bleu Cheese and Bacon burger and a
glass of house Merlot. It was all very good and we will go back. The Manager
made us feel welcome as valued customers. There is outdoor
seating on the creek and we might try that some summer evening. Dinner for two came
to $32 plus tip.
The Original Pancake House -
(2.5 of Five)
Steve had the Ham & Cheese omelet which was huge and somehow "fluffy". The portion was
enough for three meals. Marnie had eggs and bacon. All the food was good. Our server
Jocelyn was friendly and helpful but must have been a bit overloaded as we had to ask
for coffee refills and a take-home box twice. It was a very pleasant experience and
I suspect two people would dine like royalty for less than $30 while two people could
easily share an omelet for $11.
ShaadZee Bakery Bistro
-
(3 of Five)
(2011) Marnie had the bacon cheeseburger which was cooked to perfection and the
sweet potato fries were somewhat crisp which is rare to find. Steve had the Salmon
Plate which was a beautiful presentation, delicious flavors in the salmon, hard
boiled egg, capers and vinegar. The only complaints we could have would be Steve's
asparagus was a little tough (about 1/3 stalk) and we had a hard time getting refills
on our beverages. Steve had the house red which was quite good. For the quality of
the food we thought this was good value for two entrees and two glasses of wine for $42.

Tahoe Joe's
-
(3.5 of Five)
(2011) This is a Steakhouse restaurant and bar. Natalie our server was dignified and professional.
We started with Calimari Steak Strips then Marnie had Joe's Steak Salad and Steve had the Roasted
Chicken with a side of Joe's Steak mushrooms. All was good but the $65 bill seemed high for the atmosphere.
http://www.tahoejoes.com/
Thai Village -
This is a quiet restaurant in Pleasant Hill, one of our repeat favorites for datenight.
Ask for hot, it is okay, it is not "Thai hot."
Viano Vineyards
-
This quaint little winery is still run by family members. Sharon, our pourer,
was kind and friendly and took genuine interest in us. The prices are very good
especially considering how good the wine is. A bonus, the winery and tasting
room were nearly walking distance from our home, a great find!
http://www.vianovineyards.com/
The Cliff House -
We were looking for a place to have lunch overlooking the ocean. This was the
place. Made quite famous from it's history the walls are covered with signed
photographs of famous actors, actresses and politicians. Marnie had the Fish
& Chips and these were cooked perfectly where the cod was flaky and the batter
crunchy, by far Steve's favorite Fish & Chips in California so far. Their
custom tartar sauce was very interesting and savory. Steve had another
cheeseburger and it was cooked perfectly as ordered.
Cactus Taqueria -
Best crispy tacos in Rockridge! It is easy too, step off the BART and it is right across the street.
Rio City Cafe -
This restaurant and bar sit right on the river with great views of the drawbridge,
steam ships and some modern architecture. We shared a mozzarella polenta and
ice-cold beers. It was in the hundreds that day!
Fat City Bar & Cafe -
This old watering hole and meeting place holds famous stain glass artwork, the
most famous of which is The Purple Lady. Steve ordered a Cheese Bacon Burger
with no bun, no fries and medium. It was way over cooked. Marnie had the
pulled pork and complained it was too sweet. Still, this was a nice place and
worth seeing the ornately carved bar in the picture above.
Buca di Beppo
-
(4 of Five)
A short walk from the Marriot Marqui and BART Powel St. station this great chain restaurant
served us up great tasting sausage appitizers and a pepperoni salad with a great bottle of
Pinot Noir for $63. Our server Pete was fun and friendly and very helpful. Ask for the
elevator if you are disabled.
http://www.bucadibeppo.com/locations/rp_restaurant_san_francisco_ca.aspx
Lefty O'Douls -
This Irish Pub themed pub has a buffet style food bar filled with delicious
meats hand cut while you watch. However, the Rueben was a cold sandwich and
was disappointing. Some of these buildings look like they could have been
here since 1849.
Marnee Thai
-
(4 of Five)
There are two of these restaurants in the area, we went to the western one (2225 Irving) for lunch. We had
The Tom Kha soup, Shrimp Pad Thai #46 (though we ordered chicken) and Prawns & Scallop Pad Phong
Karee #44 served family style. The Pad Thai was a little too sweet but everything was
delicious. Steve tried a Taiwan Red Wine which was strong and "earthy". Lunch for two with
drinks was $45.

Mission District Taquerias
-
(2.5 of Five)
(2011) There are so many Taquerias in the Mission District we could not try or even list them all.
Steve had the Toast of Fish Saviche and the Super Taco. our friend Sachin and Marnie each tried
an entrée. The restaurant was clean and the food really hit the spot. Steve's food came to about $7

Located at the Marriot Marqui this casual dining room offers a quiet refined atmoshere.
Marnie had the steak quesadilla but thought it was bland. Steve had the bacon
cheeseburger and a couple glasses of St. Francis Zinfandel. Larry, our server was
very professional.

The Stinking Rose -
Think of all things garlic including the worlds longest braid over 300 feet
long. The Bagna Calda or "Garlic in a Hot Tub" is their signature appetizer
and the Crab looked marvelous.
Wipeout
-
(3 of Five)
(2011) Wipeout, Pier 39 the plates were huge mounds of really good food. Usually I would consider
skirt steak trash meat but it was pretty good. Steve had this and shrimp in the Surf and Turf.
Marnie and Sachin both had the Fish & Chips which was also really good and way too much food!
Our polite and friendly server Angel brought their only red wine, a "cabernette" and Marnie
had a huge glass of Stella on tap. $90 with drinks.

Bachus & Venus -
The tastings are triple the cost of other tasting rooms and though there is a wide
selection of wines the tasting only covers four. They sell wine by the glass so perhaps
they intend this to be more of a winebar. Our first server was warm and friendly but they
swapped places on the last pour and our second pourer seemed quite rude. Go to Real Napa.
Paradise Bay -
We have eaten here a few times now, sampling the Fish & Chips outside, right over the water
with a cold beer is great. Their hamburger is very good and the Caviar Oysters were
delicious. On our last visit it looked like they were going through a renovation and
the website http://www.paradisebaysausalito.com is closed so maybe there is a change in
ownership to be announced. Two people can easily dine anywhere from $35-$50.
Real Napa -
We had a very nice tasting and the pourer was friendly and generous. This tasting room
and the associated vineyards are owned by a local developer, Linda Fotsch, that is raising
two sets of twins. She seems like a very interesting person.
Cline Cellars -
This great winery is still our favorite in Northern California. The
entire operation is self sufficient using solar power and the wines
are all great. They specialize in Steve's favorite, Red Zinfandel.
We became club members at this winery which yields discounts at both
Cline and Jacuzzi across the street.
Roche -
We had a barrel tasting served by a nice friendly pourer named Jonathan.
After the barrels we tried a couple of the same wines bottled two years ago
and we all decided we didn't care for their wines.
Sonoma Cheese Factory
-

We've been here before so we brought a friend. Steve's favorite is still the double
bleu cheese burger with no bun. Three of us had double burgers and a bottle of Pinot
Noir for $30.

The Creamery Restaurant -
(3.5 of Five)
Steve had the Pastrami topped hamburger, no buns, no fries. It was messy but very
tasty. Marnie enjoyed their Ruben Sandwich. The atmoshpere is diner/ice cream
shop. Lunch for two plus ~20% tip $30.
Guaymas -
We usually have sea food when in Tiburon so we thought we would try something
different and go Mexican. The salsa was mouthwateringly good. Marnie had pork tenderloin and
Steve had the Carnitas. Both were good but be prepared for heat when eating the
Carnitas! Steve had the top shelf Margaritas. They were not stingy with the
alcohol but the drink was not very good. On our second visit we had beers and
appitizers: Guacamole, saviche', gaulupe? and calimari. All of it was very good.
Like everything in Tiburon, it is expensive.
Cheesecake Factory -

We have been to the Walnut Creek restaurant a few times now. This time we had the
Carne Asada and the Smokehouse BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger. Good thing we only go out
once a week! Both dishes were fantastic.
Chopin Cafe -

(2011) This is a quaint little Polish restaurant owned by the charming couple Evah & Janoaz.
In cooler weather get the Steak
Tartar appetizer. When you order they actually leave the restaurant to go
have the meat ground right then at Lynardi's. In warmer weather they will not put the
yolk on top. It was still very good. Marnie has gotten the perogies and the Hunter's
Stew, both delicious, and Steve
always gets the Kielbasa. All the food is very good. They have two Polish beers
by the bottle, light or dark, that went very well with the Kielbasa. We usually spend
between $60-$70. Evah also owns a bakery called All In Good Taste.
La Fogata -

This Mexican restaurant is located in downtown Walnut Creek and has good and
generous portions. We shared the "nothing but meat" burrito with pork. Good value.
Maria Maria -

This Mexican theme restaurant has good atmosphere and good food but the portions,
while appropriate,
seemed small for the price. Beware, the dark tables cause your wine glass to
become invisible. Friendly waiting staff. Two entrees and drinks came to $70.
McCovey’s Restaurant

McCovey’s Restaurant -

(2011) Eating low-carb or Paleo is really difficult when eating out but we were delighted to hear
that this bar and grill has a Paleo-friendly menu from which we ordered wings and a meal of
buffalo burgers. It was very good, cooked perfectly. Though we didn't try it McCovey’s is
famous for a Blueberry Cosmo. Mike, our waiter, had the patience of a Saint and we tipped
well. Half the meal for four plus drinks (dinner for two) came to $60 (though the ladies
partook of two pitchers!)

Pomegranate -

We like to sit outside, on the street. About half the tables are outside and half inside.
Marnie and I get the Gyro Spicy Salad which is really good. On our last visit we tried
the Persian style chicken wings (joojeh) marinade Cornish game hen and it was very tasty.
The staff is efficent and friendly. Touria is our favorite server and remembers us and what we usually order.
Two people can dine this well for $55 including drinks.

Pyramid Alehouse -

The burgers were delicious. Marnie had the Hefeweizen. Pyramid makes
about the only good commercially available Hefeweizen.
Ruth's Chris Steak House
-
(Five of Five)
Expensive but you get what you pay for. Expect to be pampered. We like our fillets rare if it
is good meat. This is a great place for a special occasion, we have spent two anniversaries
here. This last time We both had the fillet and then Steve had a small lobster tail. The steak was not quite
as rare as we usually like it but the lobster was perfect (be careful, it's hot!). We
shared a great bottle of Frank Family Zinfandel. A fancy meal with al la Carte sides
and a bottle of wine can run over $250 for two!

Sunrise Bistro
-
(Five of Five)
We have eaten breakfast here before but we had an awesome dinner Friday night.
Marnie had Turkey Meatballs over a side of spaghetti squash. Steve had the Fiesta
Burger (no bun, no potatoes) and the side of their mozzarella eggplant. The
house red Cabernet was good and went very well with Steve's meal. Our service
provided by James was stellar. The meal for two was an excellent value at $37
plus tip.

Texas BBQ -
(2.5 of Five)
We had been putting this one off because of the name. We were spared in
that they only play country western music in the bathroom. The pre-dinner
whiskey was a generous pour, probably five ounces neat. Both the slow-cooked
ribs and brisket were dry but tender. The white cheddar mac and cheese
sounded great but was no comparison to Marnie's dish. On another visit with friends
Steve had the spicy sausages which were a little dry unless you dip them in BBQ
Sauce. Marnie had the fillet and it was great.
